1-DAY CPD · FRIDAY 5 MARCH 2027 · LONDON W6

Beyond De Qi

Acupuncture is an active therapeutic process, not a series of static needle insertions. Learn what it means to ‘feel’ through the needle, and understand tissue response and turgor in Tangible Acupuncture.

Beyond De Qi

Join us for a one-day practical workshop with Andrew Nugent-Head, exploring what can happen after insertion, and how we can direct tissue changes through the needle to bring points to life.

For most, de qi is where the needling stops. The patient reports the sensation, we take it as the point of arrival, and we move on to the next point. But the needle is still in the tissue and the tissue is still responding, and it is in what follows that the degree of success of the treatment is actually determined.

The day focuses on what to look for after insertion: what we feel through the needle, how the tissue responds, and how we can work with that response. We will spend time on the state and tone of the tissue we can feel and influence around the needle and on how it changes under our hands as we work.

The day includes

  • Lecture by Andrew Nugent-Head
  • Practical work throughout. Please come prepared to needle and be needled, so that we get a first-hand experience of what is being described.
  • Demonstration and hands-on practice

By the end of the day we will have a clearer sense of what to do with a needle once it is in, and practical ways of using that in clinic when you are next treating!

“The hard part’s not De Qi. The hard part is: once you’ve got it, how do you keep it? And once you’ve learned to keep it, what are you going to do with it?”
